Army Worms Invade South

By: Raymond Wright

A new kind of army is taking over the United States. The latest invasive species to storm the South looks like a species from another planet. Armyworms are taking over lawns with no remorse. It starts with small patches of dead grass and leads to an entire lawn being destroyed. Multiple land owners are reporting almost entire acres being eaten  in a short matter of time.

Insect experts advise that to control armyworm damage, homeowners should prepare their lawns with pesticides prior to the spring and summer. If they come across armyworms and haven’t prepared their lawns in any way, the first step should be to spray the grass with pesticides that are not harmful to beneficial insects, such as the brand Capsaicin.

Many people think that armyworms will never affect their well-manicured lawns, but even students at Ardrey Kell have felt the devastating effect of of these creatures. Lucius Brown, a senior, enjoys landscaping with his father.  He has dealt with armyworms before and says he never wants to deal with them  again. “They came in like a blitzkrieg, no mercy, destroyed years of hard work and effort. … You may think you’re safe, but you’re not,” warns Brown.
