Cheers to Jeers

By: Raney South and Nicole Pierce

The Ardrey Kell student section has a reputation, and it’s not a good one. Our student section has little true school spirit. In all actuality, it’s quite embarrassing.

During our time at Ardrey Kell we have noticed that we do not know how to control ourselves when we are in the hype of a game. At an away basketball game at South Meck we intentionally vandalized their bleachers. To think if that isn’t enough, members of our student body posted and retweeted pictures of the broken pieces, adding belittling remarks to South Meck. Not only is this extremely disrespectful, but it makes us as a school look bad. The student section represents Ardrey Kell as a whole and has the power to establish our school’s reputation. According to our school’s performance we have a 95% graduation rate in comparison to an 85% statewide average. We have excelled in our state and national test results and are ranked #4 out of 113 schools, that’s something to be proud of. Instead of portraying ourselves as disrespectful animals we should use our student section to show other schools just how great we truly are.

The Ardrey Kell establishment itself is fairly new and built in an area where community is a high priority. If our students continue to make our school look bad, it also makes our community look bad. We have started community service clubs and activities that allow us to be involved with local foundations; however, if the disrespectful acts do not stop we may not be allowed to increase our involvement. Screaming derogatory terms and vandalizing other schools’ property only hinders our chances to return.

Good sportsmanship is a quality that every school should possess and we think moving forward we should respect other schools’ property and project a positive attitude, even if we lose.
