Community-Minded Knights Can Find Service Opportunities

By: Elizabeth Roland

Volunteering is both a rewarding and eye-opening experience. However, finding opportunities can be challenging due to the varying rules and requirements students need to meet in order to be eligible to volunteer. Whether students get involved for school credit or for their own personal satisfaction, participating in community service is guaranteed to leave volunteers with an unforgettable experience and provide students with a new perspective.

  1. There is a vast variety of organizations for different causes. At Matthews HELP Center, the main focus is on reducing the impact of the local poverty level by providing food and clothes at very low prices. They are always in need of thrift shop workers, cashiers, food pantry workers, volunteer receptionists and maintenance workers. Interested students should call (704) 847-8383.

  2. The Down’s Syndrome Association of Charlotte organizes an annual Buddy Walk to honor and celebrate those with Down’s Syndrome and their families. Crafts, bounce houses, face painting and magic shows are just some of the fun activities that are included in the four-hour event. Volunteers are always welcome and it is an extremely heartwarming experience.

  3. Protecting the homeless and less fortunate is the main mission of the Urban Ministry. Potential participants should be aware that anyone under 18 must be accompanied by someone 18 or older to serve, but the outcome is worth it. Volunteer positions include sorting mail, attending to shower and laundry needs, and working at the main desk. It is also possible to volunteer from home by making sandwiches or organizing a donation drive. Call (704) 347-0278 for more information.

  4. At Hands on Charlotte, there are opportunities for volunteers of all interests and talents. Some monthly projects include literacy and tutoring sessions, outdoor projects, fun and games at retirement homes, and hunger/clothing events. To get involved, students should call (704) 333-7471.
