Deadly Selfies: 5 Tales of #Horror

By: Ariel Brittain

Selfies, or photos of oneself, have rapidly increased in numbers and are in basically everyone’s social media. The act seems harmless, right? Not so much for these unfortunate selfie aficionados.

1. #PilotPower In Colorado, a 29-year-old pilot named Amritpal Singh and his friend crashed his passenger plane for no other reason than distraction by selfie. Singh was flying the plane at the time with his GoPro camera in hand (which was later recovered from the crash showing numerous “self portraits”). Singh’s GoPro was still activated when recovered from the crash. Both friends died at the scene.

2. # HoneymoonHorror On a honeymoon with his wife and a couple friends, 34-year-old James Crowlett wanted to take a swim selfie underwater and was attacked by a shark. The photo was automatically posted to Facebook. His entire leg was torn off, and he bled to death before hospital staff could save him. He died, leaving his wife and family to mourn over a picture.

3. #SuicideSelfie Young, 18-year-old Lee Jia Yao took one last selfie of the ground below her, before jumping off the top of a building and killing herself. This Shanghai sweetheart was so heartbroken after breaking up with a long-time boyfriend that she had posted things in her many social media accounts such as, “I want to stop myself from crying late at night, but I can’t do it. I can’t take it. All of this is so unfair to me. I can’t bear it at all” (dramafever.com). Little did her followers know, she was going to take such drastic measures to get rid of her pain.

4. #NoFearNoLife Overcoming your fear of heights is a tough process, and for some it involves skydiving or bungee jumping, but for 17-year-old Xenia Ignatyeva it involved climbing up a 8.5 meter bridge with no safety harness. The girl, given her fear of heights, decided it was a good idea to climb to the top of the bridge and take an accomplishment selfie. Which she did; then shortly after taking the photo, she slipped and fell to her death.

5. #CliffCasualties A Polish couple went on a much needed vacation to Portugal and, well, took in the sights. The couple, when visiting Cabo de Roca, a cape looking over the Atlantic ocean, wanted to take a better selfie of the sights. So, they both climbed over the safety barrier keeping tourists away from the edge of the cliff, and posed. They, however, were interrupted when both slipped and fell into the waters below. They both died, and left their two children, ages five and six, behind. Their children are now under custody of Polish diplomats.

So when you decide to take that perfect selfie, make sure to stay behind the barriers, watch out for sharks and, at least, put the plane on autopilot. Or else you may end up like these fatal followers.
