Evolution of the School Cookie

By: Lucius Brown

Have you been wondering why the same mouth-watering cookies are no longer available in the AK school cafeteria? You can blame the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Under the Obama administration, public schools are becoming healthier every year. The goal is to cut the amounts of fat, sugar, and salt in school foods.

In years past, the AK cookies were sold in pairs and tasted like straight flame. This year cookies are sold individually and the recipe has changed! According to Mary Johnson, the head cafeteria chef here at AK,  the new cookies are lower in fat and sugar and they are made with whole grains.

Unfortunately, the new cookies taste like cardboard. Four-year AK student Will Sapyta says,  “Yes, they do taste bad. I truly miss the cookies that we had from past years.”

Cafeteria sales are also feeling the effect of the new cookies. The cafeteria went from selling 900 cookies a day to 400 this year. That is more than a half the previous year’s sales.

The original cookies brought joy not only to the students but to the faculty, too. Everyone loves a warm and soft chocolate chip cookie. It is important for Ardrey Kell to get these cookies back on the shelves to bring back the joy and harmony of lunch.
