Game Review: “Awesomenauts” Focuses on Simple Fun

By: Michel Carrier-Auger MSRP: $10 Platforms: Xbox arcade, Playstation store (PS3 and PS4), Mac PC, Linux Genre: MOBA, action Awesomenauts, developed by Ronimo Games, comes from the competitive genre of MOBAs, where they are either loved or hated because of the competitive community that has rapidly grown since the last five years. Coming out in 2012, Awesomenauts attempts to ride the wave of MOBA popularity but Awesomenauts is still a great game for people who want a soft server MOBA. MOBAs (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) is a genre of games that many people are afraid of because of the harsh community and the difficulty in understanding the gameplay well. However, Romino, the developer, pulls off a simplification of the MOBA genre without distracting from the enjoyment by adding their own originality to the mix. MOBA games are online focused games in which the objective is to destroy some form of “core” on the other side of the map that the enemy team controls. There is also have a core to protect. A typical map for a MOBA game, when looking down at it, would resemble something like the picture below. The red dot represents the “core” that the players have to protect and those blue and purple dots are turrets or towers; things that defend the base and deal lots of damage to the players they generally want to avoid. However, your base spawns are like small minions that you hide behind to destroy their turrets. The colored lines are what is considered the “base” where the game really starts to heat up if the battle gets there.

However, Awesomenauts can also be seen from a side view, like a platformer game. This and many other aspects of the game makes it a good game to sample the MOBA genre. It has all the mechanics that all MOBAs, such as when you kill enemies or other Awesomenauts, you earn solar that can be use to purchase upgrades for your Awesomenaut. Awesomenauts also has a great aesthetic display and theme that is reminiscent of 80s cartoons. For example, one of the playable characters is Froggy G, a “gangster” frog who joined the Awesomenauts to make an honest living. There is also Leon, a gentleman chameleon who joined the awesomenauts after being the top wanted criminal on many planets. Awesomenauts is a great game that doesn’t rely on very competitive gameplay, but rather focuses on making a fun game with a funny setting and characters that is easy to get into. You won’t find much complexity, but the game’s charm will keep you entertained. Awesomenauts earns 7 arbitrary points out of 10.
