Game Review: Cthulhu Saves the World

By: Michel Carrier-Auger

Cost: 1$ to 3$ Platforms: Xbox indie games, PC, Mac Genre: Retro, RPG

Typically, main-in games include some sort of “hero-guy” who enforces justice and saves innocent civilians. But with Cthulhu Saves the World, you play as Cthulhu, from the Lovecraft mythos.

The game starts out with Cthulhu, our hero, rising from a deep slumber to do evil stuff, as Cthulhu originally wants to do. Then, a mysterious magician steals away Cthulhu’s power and the only way he can get it back is by becoming a true hero. The game is played like older 90’s RPGs similar to the early Final Fantasy games where you navigate your party in a top-down view into towns, dungeons and other places. The combat is turn based, where you tell each party member what move to use and who to use it on. Most of the game is spent in dungeons where there are random encounters every once in a while. However, after a certain amount of encounters in a dungeon, you will not have any random encounters in that same dungeon anymore. You still can trigger a random encounter from a menu if you want the experience to intensify. Once you level up, you can pick from one of two bonuses. Sometimes it might just be a flat stat increase, or it might be a new ability.

However, when you’re playing Cthulhu Saves the World, what drives you to play more is the story. The writing for all the conversations is also what helps drive the game because of the funny conversations Cthulhu might have with his groupies. I found myself wanting to advance in the story because I wanted to see more funny dialogue. As you advance, you pick up more party members that add to the humor of the game. The updated game also added a great title along with new game modes to heighten replay value. For some, the gameplay might be repetitive and boring, but the humor and writing carries the game and encourages you to play more.

I give Cthulhu Saves the World 8 insane cult members out of 10.
