On TV: What to Watch this Fall

By: Sarah King

Fall has officially begun, so bring on the sweater weather, football, pumpkin snacks, and seasonal television! It’s about time for us devoted Netflix watchers to start thinking about which new shows on TV we should get hooked on, so if you ever have a bit of free time between school, clubs, and sports, here is a sneak peek at the five most promising shows of fall.

Gotham (Fox) Premiered: September 22 Rating: B Airs: Mondays 8-9 p.m. Gotham is a crime-based drama that focuses on characters appearing in the DC Comics, including Batman. It builds on the backstories of the city’s iconic villains such as Catwoman, The Riddler, The Penguin, and The Joker. It has a supporting cast with charisma and is enticing enough to keep viewers watching.

American Horror Story: Freak Show (FX) Premiered: October 7 Rating: B Airs: Wednesdays 10-11:30 p.m. Even though American Horror Story is a familiar name among viewers in the TV world, the new incarnation brings a fresh idea to its already praised concept. Set in the 1950s, this freak show has horrifying clowns, conjoined twins, and other monstrosities that will be sure to raise major goosebumps. The extremely gaudy, almost overworked “freaks” may seem unoriginal, but the twisted storyline will keep viewers hooked and ready for more. In case you missed previous seasons, you can catch up with all the episodes on Netflix!

Red Band Society (Fox) Premiered: September 17 Rating: A – Airs: Wednesdays 9-10 p.m. Red Band Society is a “dramedy” that focuses on teenagers with terminal illnesses. Although a show devoted to sick teenagers may seem depressing, this show proves to be original and upbeat. Starring Oscar winner Octavia Spencer and other strong leads, the cast is relatable and funny so viewers are instantly attached. This show can be perceived as a bit cheesy, but it never fails to be inspirational.

The Flash (CW) Premiered: October 7 Rating: A Airs: Tuesdays 8-9 p.m. The Flash is another superhero-themed TV show. It begins when Barry Allen, a detective and scientist, is struck by lightning caused by a malfunctioning particle accelerator. After waking up from a coma, Barry has superhuman speed and reflexes. The Flash will soon cross over with CW’s already booming show, Arrow, but you don’t have to be a fan of Arrow to love Flash. This show has a solid cast and already has the potential to be the next big thing.

How to get Away with Murder (ABC) Premiered: September 25 Rating: A Airs: Thursdays 10-11 p.m. Shonda Rhimes, the creator of hit shows such as Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal, dazzles viewers once again with How to get Away with Murder. This show is a crime-based drama that focuses on a strong-willed female character who teaches a class on how to solve homicides. There are two stories going on at once, which can be confusing at times, but the suspense and intensity of the show keep audiences wanting more. New Fall TV premieres are one of the most anticipated events of the fall season, and this year is no exception. However, don’t forget about the ongoing and well-loved TV series, The Big Bang Theory, which just started its eighth season on CBS. It never fails to arouse raucous laughter and might still be the most praised TV show of the season .
