Restaurant Review: Come to Mama’s Coffee House for Comfort and Coffee at Great Prices

By: Tiffany Crawford

Located on Main Street in the quaint town of Pineville, Mama’s Coffee House is the perfect place for those looking to deviate from big name coffee retailers in the Charlotte area, many of which sport high prices that, quite frankly, don’t take into consideration the small wallets of young adults.

Upon arrival, multiple vividly painted doors create an entrance that foreshadows the oddities one will discover upon stepping through. Inside, the front door, walls, floors and even furniture have been completely covered in graffiti written by the business’s many customers. Some messages consist of very sweet notes left behind by couples, including one visiting from South Africa. The message reads: “So glad we stopped for coffee! And we will be back,” signed by Basil and Vonne of Cape Town, South Africa on December 5, 2012. The couple have since returned twice and signed the dates of the visits next to their original message. Other messages are simply little notes of encouragement. Quite a few are customers professing their love for Mama’s Coffee House.

The place is filled with unique décor and art from local North Carolina artists. There’s lots of seating, including two individual areas with couches to add a touch of coziness to what is already an inviting atmosphere. There are even board games for those who come with large groups of friends looking for more to do than just sit on their phones and share small talk. Prices at Mama’s are surprisingly low; which reminds us that sometimes we pay for a big name brand that inflates prices for nearly the exact same goods. I purchased an iced coffee for $1.75. I also purchased a bagel with cream cheese for $2.99. My total? Only $5.13 for a delicious and filling meal.

Perhaps even better than the cheap prices is the great customer service. It is rare to find a business owner who is able to connect and form relationships with customers, but at Mama’s, the owners, a Venezuelan couple, have done just that. Amidst cleaning and taking orders, “La Mama” still managed to make sure she spoke to each person in the room, many of whom she has come to know personally from their frequent visits. Overall, I give my experience at Mama’s five stars. The atmosphere, food, and service are great and I recommend that everyone visit!
