SCarowinds Offers Thrills and Chills

Updated: May 27

October is the month when the freaks come out. There are costumes, make-up, decorations, and most importantly, candy. But the best part? Family-friendly Carowinds transforms into SCarowinds, with a scary, frightening, PG-13 display of fantasy and reality. The costumes. The make-up. The mazes. All amazing. This year’s SCarowinds event, as usual, did not disappoint thrill-seekers.

Faces emerging from the mazes looked absolutely terrified. No wonder: the

mazes are fright-inducing. Hands come down from the ceiling, monsters jump in your face and blood-curdling screams can be heard from all around. However, don’t worry. Even though these mazes are meant to scare you, the monsters and actors are not allowed to touch you, as Carowinds aims to be a family-friendly park, no matter what time of day it is.

Even when you aren’t in the maze there still opportunities to be frightened: there are monsters and ghouls around every corner. Some of them slide on the ground beside you or quietly walk behind you. Most just stare at you, though, trying to strike fear in your heart. There are little attractions that you have to go through to get to rides and other mazes, too. Even better, most of the roller coasters and rides are still active while SCarowinds is going on.

SCarowinds hires more than 500 actors each season, many of them returning from previous years. The monsters usually go in around 3 p.m. each day to get into costume and have their makeup done. The actors bond like family. They joke around, but they also do a fantastic job of scaring the pants off  you.

If you missed this year’s excitement, be sure to put SCarowinds on your agenda for next fall.
