TV Preview: Return to Twin Peaks

By: Sydney Nazloo

“I’ll see you again in 25 years,” Laura Palmer remarks in the series finale of Twin Peaks. It seems as though she is following through with her promise. Twin Peaks is scheduled to run a third season in 2016 featuring most of the original cast.

Twin Peaks first premiered in April 1990 and ran until June 1991. Created by Mark Frost and David Lynch, the show intrigued audiences with mystery and darkness. The series follows Dale Cooper, an FBI agent sent to a small town in northern Washington to investigate the murder of a young woman named Laura Palmer. As he digs deeper into the case, it becomes obvious that dark forces are at play in this sleepy hamlet. The show features numerous love triangles, plenty of small town intrigue, a prophetical giant, a Man from Another Place and a portal to the spirit world called “The Black Lodge.”

Now considered a cult classic, Twin Peaks has a sizable fanbase due to social media sites such as Tumblr and Twitter. The video announcing the return of the show already has over one million views on YouTube.

Twin Peaks was cancelled in 1991 after only two seasons due to low ratings. Frost and Lynch also released a prequel film, Fire Walk with Me, at the 1992 Cannes Film Festival that failed horribly. It can’t be said how well the new season will do considering the show’s lackluster critical history, but it is still worth watching this long-awaited return. The new six-show season will premiere on Showtime in early 2016.

Seasons One and Two of Twin Peaks are on Netflix. (Note: Twin Peaks is very scary and sometimes disturbing. Watch at your own risk)
