TV Review: Repeat After Me–or Not

By: Kristina Mata

Imagine doing something normal, something a part of your everyday routine. Now imagine that same scenario, except now someone is telling you absolutely everything you have to do no matter how loud, bizarre, or crazy. You’ve just imagined Repeat After Me, a reality TV comedy airing on ABC. The show has its fair share of both hilarious and uncomfortable incidents.

Executively produced by Ellen DeGenres, the show first aired on February 17, 2015. Repeat After Me is hosted by Wendi McLendon Covey, the star of ABC’s The Goldbergs. Through an earpiece, she tells celebrities like Justin Bieber, Randy Jackson, Kristen Bell and many others exactly what to do, placing them in crazy situations. As you could imagine, some of these end up being laugh-out-loud funny with moments that set the entire the room into hysteria. One problem: some other moments cross the line.

For example, an episode with Bieber takes place in a bowling alley with a nice old lady who is helping as his bowling instructor. The scene starts out with a relatively normal conversation, albeit a few hilarious phrases mixed in. Later, Bieber begins twerking and standing much too close to her for comfort. Finally, he asks her if she’s ever robbed a liquor store, sending her into an angry-looking panic. Other segments aren’t all that clean. In Bieber’s, Jackson’s and Bell’s segments, they all make some rather inappropriate remarks.

That’s a major issue. A lot of the time, the other people in the scene end up confused, visibly uncomfortable or, often, both. This is a hidden-camera show! It’s not like they’ve given consent to this situation beforehand, though what’s actually happening is revealed to them at the end of the segment. This show could be funny without having situations that make the other person just plain uncomfortable. Admittedly, the show is still interesting and has potential It’s definitely something you should check out if you enjoy hidden camera gags.
