High School Graduation

Main Focus: Graduation

Graduation, a significant moment in a student’s life where they take their last final step of their school life. But as much as graduation can be an exciting moment, it can only occur if the student reached the requirements in order to graduate in high school as a senior. 


In this article, we will be discussing requirements for graduation in high schools. Just to note, these requirements are only eligible for North Carolina High Schools indicating that not all high schools outside of NC may follow the same standards when referring to graduation requirements. 


Course requirements

According to the recent graduation guidelines in NC, 24 credits are needed to graduate from high school. For graduation, certain courses of English, Maths, Sciences, Social Studies and even health/PE are required to be met to reach 24 credits in those high school years. Note that the course requirements can be standard, honors or AP. Below listed are the course requirements for graduation:

  • English (4):

    • English I 

    • English II

    • English III or AP English Language

    • English IV or AP English IV (Literature & Composition)

  • Math (4):

    • NC Math 1

    • NC Math 2

    • NC Math 3

    • NC Math 4 or any AP Maths (AP Precalculus, AP Statistics, etc)

  • Science (3):

    • Earth/Environmental

    • Biology

    • A Physical Science: 

      • Chemistry or

      • Physical Science or

      • Physics 

  • Social Studies (4):

    • World History 

    • Civic Literacy or AP Government

    • American History or AP US History or HIS 131 & 132

    • Economics & Personal Finance 

  • Health/PE (1):

    • Health/PE (Semester or Year-Long)

As much as these core classes are required to be met for graduation of high school, electives are also important to be met. According to the graduation guidelines of NC, 2 of the 8 electives must be from either, CTE, Fine Arts, or World Language. If chosen a world language, 2 credits of the same world language are required and will be overseen by the universities you apply to. 


Graduation Planner

Remember, you don’t have to be a junior or senior, you can always start graduation planning early and what career you want to pursue after. Do you want to start your planning for graduation and keeping your credits and courses on track? Start looking for your graduation requirement tracker for your school today before it is too late! Starting to look at the graduation requirements that are to be met early starting from your freshman year would be a great start to your journey of graduation. 


In the meantime along with the tracker, you can make appointments with your counselor(s) or any teacher(s) who can help you choose your courses or help with the graduation requirements. Counselors are known to give great advice when it comes to the line of graduation, college and even careers and pathways. So, if you are confused with any of the requirements or are stuck on what courses you should take, it is suggested to make an appointment with your counselor so that the path of graduation could go at ease for you!
