The Presidential Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) is a national honor that is given to individuals who demonstrate exceptional dedication to community service. It was established by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, and celebrates the contributions of volunteers that make a significant impact on their community. Whether you’re a student that wants to enhance your college resume or just someone that is passionate about helping your community, earning the PVSA is a great award to recognize the difference that you are making.
Overview
The PVSA offers four distinct levels of recognition: Bronze, Silver, and Gold, each based on the number of hours served within a 12-month period. There is also a Lifetime Achievement Award given to really committed individuals. Each level comes with a certificate, medallion, and letter signed by the President of the United States, making it a really meaningful award for the recipients.
Eligibility and Criteria
To qualify for the PVSA, individuals must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and have volunteered through PVSA eligible organizations. The award is divided into age groups: Kids(5-1), Teens(11-15), Young Adults (16-25), and Adults (26+). Each group has specific hour requirements for each level of the award.
Most of you will fall under the 11-15 and 16-25 category, and the hour requirements are:
Bronze Award: 50-74 hours for Teens; 100-174 hours for Young Adults
Silver Award: 75-99 hours for Teens; 175-249 hours for Young Adults
Gold Award: 100+ hours for Teens; 250+ hours for Young Adults
Lifetime Achievement Award: 4,000+ hours over a lifetime for all age groups
These hours can be acquired through any combination of volunteer work, such as serving at food banks, tutoring, or assisting at local non-profit organizations.
How to Get Involved
To begin your journey toward the PVSA, the first step is to find volunteer opportunities that align with your passion and goals. Many organizations are certified to track volunteer hours for PVSA, so check with local volunteer programs or your counselor. Some opportunities that you can find are through organizations such as the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, or local hospitals. Some school clubs are really volunteer oriented so it would be beneficial to join those. This can include UNICEF, Red Cross, and environmental clubs.
