TV Review: Breaking Bad Spinoff, Better Call Saul, is Worth Watching

By: Sam Neumann

Better Call Saul is a spinoff of the very popular TV show, Breaking Bad. It is a prequel, so it takes place six years before the setting of Breaking Bad. AMC took a big gamble with this show and so far it has paid off. Better Call Saul will never be Breaking Bad, but it may be just as terrifying and thrilling. Two totally different concepts intertwine with each other and the creator, Vince Gilligan, makes it work.

In this dark comedy, Bob Odenkirk plays lawyer Jimmy McGill. Jimmy represents clients that nobody wants and is struggling to make ends meet. Two skaters try scamming him one day by jumping in front of his car. Instead of getting them in trouble, he finds them and plots a scam of his own. They plan to con Mrs. Kettleman, whose husband has stolen millions of dollars. However, their plan is foiled once the two skaters jump in front of the wrong car. The botched plan puts Jimmy and the two skaters in the desert making a deal with a drug lord for their lives.

I won’t spoil the rest, but it is definitely a show worth checking out if you are a Breaking Bad fan, or you are just looking for a good TV show to watch. Out of ten, I would give it a solid eight. It has been very good so far and only has more potential to grow.

Better Call Saul is on Monday Nights on AMC, at 10:00 PM.
