Restaurant Review: For Funky Atmosphere and Phenomenal Food, Try Cabo Fish Taco

By: Abby Hawkins

NoDa is Charlotte’s hot spot for good food and great music. The area is full of amazing hole-in-the-wall eateries that make for wonderful culinary exploration. One of many great food stops here is Cabo Fish Taco.

At first glance, the atmosphere has a hint of Spanish flare. Dia de los muertos-style paintings are scattered around, but the music played is more modernized eighties classics.

Servers start diners off with a tangy corn salsa and tortilla chips. Guests should consider ordering the spicy jalapeno guacamole with pita chips, which make a zesty appetizer that leaves a lingering but not overpowering heat on the palate. For the main course, I strongly recommend the beer-battered white fish with cabbage, a side of black beans and baja rice. Usually when it comes to fish, it’s either a hit or miss for me. This was most definitely a hit. The fish was cooked perfectly; it was juicy, full of flavor and complemented by the cool cabbage. If you’re a fan of spice, this hideaway is a fantastic. It is a little on the expensive side: an $11 entree plus an appetizer and tip can end up being about $25, but it’s worth the money.

Unfortunately, while Cabo Fish Taco is a great place to go for food, its not the best place for a conversation. It is loud even on a weekday. The waitress had to speak up a couple of times just to ask for drink orders. Cabo was full of people from young adult to mid 50s. However, there were no children in sight, probably because there are a few bars nearby.

If you are looking for a hip, new eatery because you are tired of the same old fast food or take out, this is the joint. Although a bit loud, a good atmosphere and delicious food make Cabo Fish Taco a great choice. Check it out at 3201 N Davidson St, Charlotte, NC 28205.
